What to Pack in Your Birth Bag (without overpacking)
Sep 22, 2026
People ask me for "the list" so often that I finally just made one. An actual, doula-approved, born from 150+ families supported, birth bag list. Not a Pinterest, TikTok fantasy over-packing list, but the stuff that earns its spot in your bag.
So let's go through it, section by section, with the commentary you won't find on the printable version.
The paperwork nobody thinks about until they're asked for it
Insurance information, photo ID, and your birth plan. Boring, I know. But you do not want to be digging through your purse for your insurance card while you're mid contraction. Put these in one spot in your bag now, not "somewhere I'll remember later."
Comfort essentials that actually earn their spot
Comfortable clothing or your own birthing gown, because the hospital one is doing you no favors on the comfort front. No slip socks if you want your own pair (the hospital ones work fine too, this is a personal preference item). Nursing bras, because you'll want them sooner than you think. A blanket from home, because hospital blankets are not always the softest. (Pro tip: pack a trash bag. Birth is full of LOTTTTSSSS of fluids. You don't want it mixing with your clean clothes).
And your lip balm. I cannot stress this enough. Labor is dehydrating in ways nobody warns you about, and chapped lips at hour fourteen is a very specific kind of misery you can just avoid.
The snacks and hydration section, aka the most important part
A water bottle with a straw (trust me on the straw), high energy snacks, Liquid IV or Gatorade packets, and your favorite snacks for after delivery. Labor burns an absurd number of calories. You are running a marathon. Fuel accordingly.
The comfort measures tools people forget exist
This is my favorite section because it's the most overlooked. A tennis ball for counterpressure on your back. A labor comb (yes, an actual comb, it works, but is also optional). A birth ball if your hospital doesn't provide one. Essential oils if that's your thing.
These are the tools your partner should actually know how to use, not just pack. A tennis ball sitting unused in your bag doesn't do anything for you. A tennis ball your partner knows exactly where and how to apply pressure with? Game changer. This is a huge piece of what we practice together in The Birth Partnership, so the tools in your bag actually get used the way they're supposed to.
Small comforts that make a bigger difference than you'd expect
A stroller fan and a Bluetooth speaker or headphones (great for blocking out hospital sounds). I know these sound random sitting on a list next to "birth plan," but ask anyone who's labored in a hot hospital room with no airflow, or wanted their own playlist instead of whatever's on the waiting room TV. Small comforts add up fast when you're in it.
For after
Postpartum clothing (bring something comfortable and a maternity option too, your body needs both), PJs, and a going home outfit. Keep expectations low here. Comfortable and washable beats cute every time.
Baby's bag, short and sweet
Newborn diapers, wipes, three onesies, a hat, socks, a going home outfit, a swaddle blanket, and the car seat with its cover, already installed before your due date, not being installed in the hospital parking lot.
Partner's bag, because they need one too
Photo ID, snacks and drinks (MORE SNACKS THAN YOU THINK YOU NEED), toiletries, phone and charger, a pillow, a blanket, a swim suit and towel (yes, for the shower, laboring in water is a legitimate comfort measure), at least two changes of clothes, a jacket, and comfortable shoes. Your partner is going to be on their feet and running on adrenaline for a long stretch.

I put every single one of these items into a free hospital bag packing list for mom, partner, and baby, organized and ready to go so you're not rebuilding it from a blog post at 37 weeks.

Pack the bag. Then go one step further and actually know how to use what's in it. That second part is where the real preparation happens.
Happy you're here,
Kyndrick
